The Union government has written a letter twice urging the new government to be formed in Tamil Nadu to join the PM SHRI scheme, in a manner that compels it against the two-language policy. The Union government is implementing the PM SHRI scheme as part of the National Education Policy. The DMK government has been opposing this scheme, stating that it aims to indirectly impose a three-language policy against the two-language policy currently in practice in Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, the DMK government unequivocally stated that compelling the acceptance of a Union government scheme, given that education is on the concurrent list, is against the federal system.
As the Tamil Nadu government continuously refused to join the PM SHRI scheme, the Union government has withheld funds amounting to approximately Rs 2,151 crore from being released to Tamil Nadu. Similarly, the West Bengal state government has also been continuously opposing the PM SHRI scheme. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized that despite the state government's 40% financial contribution, the scheme bears the Union government's stamp "Pradhan Mantri" in its name. In this situation, the Union Ministry of Education has sent a letter to the Chief Secretaries of the Tamil Nadu and West Bengal governments. The letter emphasizes signing the Memorandum of Understanding to join the PM SHRI scheme soon. It is noteworthy that the Union government has written a letter urging the new government to be formed in Tamil Nadu to join the PM SHRI scheme, in a manner that compels it.
