FIFA has announced eight significant new rules for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. These changes follow recent incidents, including the Senegal team's protest at the African Cup and a controversial action against Brazilian player Vinicius.
The new regulations aim to enhance fair play and efficiency. Players will now receive a red card for speaking with a closed mouth during on-field confrontations. Similarly, a red card will be issued, and the team declared to have lost, if a player exits the field in protest against a referee's decision.
To combat time-wasting, a strict 5-second deadline has been imposed for throw-ins and goal-kicks. Substituting players must also leave the field within 10 seconds. New medical guidelines have been introduced for injured players receiving treatment on the pitch.
Furthermore, major adjustments have been made to VAR technology rules to ensure accurate correction of card decisions. For player welfare, a mandatory 3-minute water break will be enforced in each half. Finally, consultations are prohibited during goalkeeper treatment, meaning other players cannot leave the field boundary to confer with coaches.
