NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, renowned for its exploration of Pluto and distant solar system objects, has emerged from its longest-ever hibernation. The probe, currently 5.9 billion miles (9.5 billion kilometers) from Earth, resumed activity on June 23.
The spacecraft entered a planned hibernation mode on August 7, 2025, and was reactivated using pre-stored commands on its main computer. Flight controllers at the Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, confirmed New Horizons is in excellent condition.
It is now prepared to transmit scientific data collected during its dormant period from its current location within the Kuiper Belt, a region characterized by icy objects.
