Mettur Dam Water Release Delayed for Kuruvai Cultivation

11 Jun 2026, 09:59 am
The Water Resources Department has announced that water will not be released from Mettur Dam tomorrow for Kuruvai paddy cultivation. Traditionally, water is released annually from June 12, providing irrigation to approximately 17 lakh acres of agricultural land across 12 districts, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai. This year, the delay is attributed to insufficient rainfall in the Cauvery catchment area, which has led to a reduced water inflow. Consequently, the Mettur Dam's water level has dropped to 79.62 feet. Water is typically released for Kuruvai cultivation only when the dam's level exceeds 90 feet.Currently, with the reservoir's low water reserves, only 1,000 cubic feet of water is being discharged to meet drinking water requirements. This postponement of water release from Mettur Dam has caused significant concern among Cauvery Delta farmers, who are unable to commence their Kuruvai cultivation.
