Two airport staff members were injured on August 16, 2026, when a firearm discharged during a security check at Varanasi airport. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 am as an Air India passenger, who was traveling to Mumbai, was undergoing mandatory verification for weapons he had declared before boarding.
The bullet reportedly struck the ground before hitting two AAICLAS screeners. A female staff member sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh, while a male colleague suffered an injury to his hand.
Varanasi Airport Director Puneet Gupta confirmed that both victims were transported to the New Laxmi Trauma Centre and remain in stable condition. Local police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon.
