The Supreme Court will constitute a high-powered committee on Wednesday to investigate allegations regarding police conduct during the July 20 student protest march toward Parliament. Led by a retired Supreme Court judge, the panel will include a former High Court chief justice and a senior police official to examine the use of force and recommend future guidelines for managing demonstrations.
The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has requested legal counsel to submit suggestions regarding the committee's terms of reference by Tuesday evening. The inquiry will review evidence, including video footage and CCTV records, and address specific claims such as the alleged use of pellet guns against protesters. The committee is also tasked with evaluating potential interim compensation for injured individuals.
In its affidavit, the Delhi Police maintained that its actions were lawful and necessary to protect public order and government installations. The police reported that 248 officers sustained injuries during the protest and pledged full cooperation with the judicial inquiry. The court stated that the committee will provide victims an opportunity to present their versions of events before final recommendations are issued.
