The Indian government is tightening regulations on the number of mobile connections an individual can hold, with new enforcement rules taking effect on August 24. Telecom operators are now required to verify a subscriber's existing connections before issuing any new SIM cards to ensure they have not exceeded the permitted limit.
Under the new mandate, customers must disclose all mobile numbers registered in their name across different operators and service areas on their application forms. To facilitate this, operators will cross-check records using the government’s Digital Intelligence Platform, which will also feature a photo-based identification system starting August 23 to flag users who have reached their threshold.
Telecom companies have been granted until November 30 to fully integrate their internal processes with the government's platform. The Department of Telecommunications stated that these measures are intended to ensure subscribers adhere strictly to the prescribed limits for mobile connections.
