Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has launched a sit-in protest at the Parliament Street police station, demanding the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) regarding injuries sustained by student Sahil Lochab. Gandhi alleges that Lochab suffered severe eye damage after police used a pellet gun against him during a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
Delhi Police have refused to file an FIR, citing that the Supreme Court has already established a high-level expert committee to investigate allegations of excessive force during student demonstrations. The police have also denied the use of pellet guns against protesters. Gandhi, who has condemned the police action as barbaric, is demanding accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Lochab was participating in a protest demanding the resignation of the Education Minister over the NEET paper leak when he was injured. Gandhi has declared that he will remain at the police station until the FIR is filed, affirming his support for the students.
