Twenty-two Indian nationals are among the crew members held captive following the hijacking of two commercial vessels off the coasts of Yemen and Somalia. A senior shipping ministry official confirmed the separate incidents occurred in mid-August.
On August 20, armed pirates seized the Eritrea-flagged oil tanker M T Sibu 1 in the Gulf of Aden, approximately 30 nautical miles from Yemen. The vessel was carrying 20 crew members, including 16 Indian nationals.
In a separate incident on August 17, a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship was hijacked off the coast of Puntland, Somalia. Six Indians were among the 10 crew members on board that vessel, though officials report that all Indian crew members involved in both incidents remain safe.
