Gummidipoondi and Cheyyur have emerged as the primary alternatives for the development of a second greenfield airport in Chennai. Experts have highlighted that selecting these locations would necessitate a comprehensive new evaluation process.
The project would require extensive land acquisition, master planning, and securing approvals from multiple government bodies, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Officials noted that initiating these procedures from the beginning could result in significant delays upto 5-6 years for the proposed airport.
