Six airports in Indonesia, including those serving the capital Jakarta, have suspended operations following a major eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano. The resulting volcanic ash cloud, which has reached altitudes between 20,000 and 50,000 feet, has disrupted over 300 flights. At Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, services were halted at 5:30 a.m., leaving approximately 22,800 passengers stranded as they queued to manage refunds and luggage.
The ash plume has impacted airspace over Jakarta, the Sunda Strait, and the Indian Ocean, forcing the cancellation of numerous domestic flights to Bali and Surabaya, as well as international routes to cities including Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Amsterdam, Seoul, Doha, and Kuala Lumpur. While some flights were diverted to alternative routes, the widespread disruption continues to affect air travel across the region.
