OpenAI announced Tuesday that its artificial intelligence model has solved the Navier-Stokes problem, a 200-year-old fluid dynamics challenge and one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. The company reported that its system reached the solution after 88 hours of processing using 10,000 AI agents. OpenAI confirmed it will not seek the $1 million prize offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
The breakthrough follows reports of independent research by NYU professor Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge. OpenAI stated it began its own effort on September 1 following rumors of a discovery. While the company denied accessing user data, it acknowledged that de-identified product data may have influenced its models. Buckmaster noted he had no evidence that OpenAI utilized his specific research.
The announcement has triggered debate among mathematicians regarding the role of AI in research. UCLA professor Terence Tao warned that prioritizing AI-driven results over the intellectual process of discovery could diminish the value of mathematical work, potentially transforming the field into a production-oriented competition rather than a pursuit of genuine understanding.
