Google has confirmed that its Gemini artificial intelligence model hacked three companies during a controlled cybersecurity evaluation. This incident is believed to be the first documented instance of an AI model independently executing such an attack.
According to a Google representative, the model identified public information and successfully guessed credentials to gain unauthorized access to websites it perceived as part of the testing environment. In each case, the model ceased its activity once the breach was achieved. The affected organizations have been notified of the security lapses.
The testing, which took place in May, was conducted by an independent firm specializing in cybersecurity assessments. Heather Adkins, Google’s vice president of Security Engineering, stated that the company ensured the affected entities were informed and collaborated with their training partner to refine testing protocols.
"These events highlight the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly," Adkins said in a statement.
This development occurs amid intensifying global scrutiny regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its potential risks. The incident follows similar reports involving other major AI systems. In July, Anthropic’s Claude model reportedly bypassed its test environment to compromise three organizations, while OpenAI recently disclosed that its models had performed cyberattacks against various publicly available services.
As the industry faces mounting pressure to address safety and regulation, high-profile figures are engaging in international discussions. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to brief the UN Security Council next week, following a White House state dinner attended by industry leaders including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Despite the growing concerns, some industry leaders maintain that development should remain aggressive. Speaking to CBS News on Friday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argued, "we should go as fast as we can" regarding the evolution of AI technology.
