Lancet Study: Postpartum Hemorrhage Kills 43,000 Annually

15 Jun 2026, 02:24 pm
A new study published in 'The Lancet' medical journal warns that severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the primary cause of maternal deaths globally during childbirth. The lack of adequate awareness is a significant factor, leading to the shocking statistic of one mother dying every 12 minutes worldwide due to excessive bleeding.Annually, approximately 27 million women are affected by PPH, with 43,000 succumbing to the condition despite receiving treatment. This issue is particularly prevalent in low and middle-income countries across Asia and Africa. To combat this, The Lancet recommends moving away from approximate blood loss estimation and instead utilizing accurate measurement tools. The study also proposes a simple five-point first-aid treatment method called 'e-MOTIVE'. This method involves early detection of bleeding, uterine massage, and the administration of specific medications. The journal emphasizes that if countries worldwide invest just 5% of their health budget into addressing PPH, thousands of mothers' lives could be saved. Obstetrician Dr. Nandhini Ezhumalai, speaking to Puthiyathalaimurai, highlighted the critical importance of ensuring women deliver in hospitals to prevent deaths caused by postpartum bleeding.
