Tesla has showcased the advanced capabilities of its redesigned Roadster, featuring a demonstration where the electric sports car navigated a curved ramp, drove upside down, and performed a brief flight before landing safely. The event took place on October 15 at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas, nearly nine years after the vehicle was initially unveiled.
The demonstration highlighted technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, specifically incorporating cold-gas thrusters that utilize pressurized gas to generate thrust. These specialized systems allow the vehicle to execute maneuvers that are impossible for standard automobiles. Elon Musk shared footage of the feat on his social media platform, X, stating, "Turns out the future does have flying cars."
Despite the successful demonstration, the company emphasized that the maneuvers were performed under strictly controlled conditions. Significant hurdles remain regarding the practical application, safety standards, and legal regulatory approval required for such technology to operate on public roads. There is currently no indication that the vehicle is cleared for airborne use in real-world traffic.
Originally announced in November 2017, the next-generation Roadster project has experienced multiple delays. Following the recent unveiling, reports indicate that Tesla now aims to commence production in 2028. While the demonstration has brought renewed attention to the concept of flying vehicles, the commercial availability and everyday utility of the Roadster remain subject to further development.
