The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) is preparing to launch a new self-assessment tool within its mobile application, enabling customers to generate their own bi-monthly electricity bills. This initiative will allow users to photograph their meter readings and upload the images directly to the app, which will then calculate the consumption charges and deliver the invoice via SMS and WhatsApp.
According to officials, the rollout will begin in select regions within the next two weeks, with a full statewide implementation scheduled for December. To utilize the service, consumers will need to select the self-assessment icon, input their service number, and use the integrated camera to capture the meter's digital reading. The system will automatically process the data to generate a bill. To maintain accuracy, the software is designed to flag any entries that show significant variations from historical consumption patterns, triggering a manual review by utility staff. Once the bill is generated, users may settle their payments either through online channels or at designated billing counters.
The utility company stated that the project is intended to mitigate challenges related to manpower shortages and reduce billing discrepancies. Officials added that they plan to provide comprehensive instructions at billing counters to assist customers in navigating the new system.
However, the move has faced criticism from some observers. Retired TNEB officer S. Neelakandan expressed concerns regarding the policy, stating, "The move could lead to revenue loss and the utility should not shift its responsibility for meter assessment onto consumers." Despite these objections, the corporation maintains that the digital transition will streamline the overall billing process.
