The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a QR code–based photo identity system to enhance security at vote counting centres.
The counting is on May 4 in Kerala, Assam,Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, along with bypolls in seven constituencies.
The new system, integrated into the ECINET platform, aims to prevent unauthorised access to sensitive counting areas.
A three-tier verification process has been mandated.
While the outer two layers will involve manual checks of photo IDs issued by Returning Officers, entry into the innermost zone near counting halls will require successful QR code authentication.
Media access will continue through existing accreditation procedures, with dedicated media centres set up near counting venues
