US President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada, blaming the country’s "willful negligence" for hundreds of wildfires that have sent a blanket of smoke across large parts of the northern United States and worsened air quality in cities from Minnesota and Michigan to New York and Pennsylvania.
Canada reported about 888 active fires, many out of control, including more than 190 in Ontario and over 59 in British Columbia; nearly 3 million hectares have been destroyed, and officials said more than 150 fire crews plus over 80 water bombers and helicopters are responding in Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended his government's actions, saying Canada has helped the US in past disasters and urging the United States to send support rather than complaints.
US lawmakers warned that "patience has run out," urging action on forest thinning and enforcement and suggesting possible direct US involvement in cross-border firefighting; Trump said he would call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for an explanation. Carney and Canadian officials said the countries remain in close communication, cited reciprocal firefighting agreements, and stressed that climate change and weather systems cross borders.
