The Tamil Nadu government has issued an extraordinary gazette notification amending the Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Vending (in Shops and Bars) Rules, 2003. Under the new regulations, bars are now permitted to be located either adjoining a liquor shop or within a distance of 100 metres from the premises. Previously, the rules restricted bar locations to within or immediately adjoining the shops.
Additional changes include increasing the specified limit in sub-rule (2) of rule 10 from fifteen to twenty. Furthermore, the requirement that the plinth area for any bar exceeding fifteen square metres be decided by the District Collector has been omitted from the rules. The amendment was signed by K. Manivasan, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government.
