The Union government has stated that Karnataka does not require the consent of downstream states, including Tamil Nadu, to construct the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery River. Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary provided this clarification in the Rajya Sabha in response to a question raised by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss.
The Minister noted that the Supreme Court’s judgment dated February 16, 2018, does not mandate obtaining approval from other states for construction activities on the Cauvery. He further explained that states possess the authority to utilize water and enjoy its benefits within their own borders, provided such actions do not conflict with the orders of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
Additionally, the Centre announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the Karnataka government for the Mekedatu dam and drinking water project has been returned. The state has been instructed to revise the proposal to ensure it aligns with the tribunal's verdict and the guidelines set by the Central Water Commission.
