India has officially assigned standard names to 27 geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh along the Line of Actual Control. The move, announced on August 7, 2026, involves mapping 21 land areas, four mountain passes, one lake, and a monument on official Survey of India records to strengthen territorial claims and improve administrative documentation.
The initiative serves as a direct response to China’s repeated attempts to rename locations within the state, which Beijing refers to as South Tibet. Indian officials stated that formalizing these names removes ambiguity and rejects China’s practice of assigning fictitious labels to Indian territory, including the strategically significant area of Longju.
India has consistently maintained that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of the country, dismissing China's renaming efforts as ineffective in altering the legal status of the region. This mapping exercise is expected to support essential administrative activities, such as infrastructure planning and census operations, while reinforcing India's position amid ongoing border tensions.
