The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has developed a comprehensive strategy to upgrade passenger facilities at Chennai airport’s domestic and international terminals. The initiative follows a recent assessment of passenger grievances and comes amid calls from the Tamil Nadu government for a change in the airport's management.
Addressing the frequent complaints regarding navigation, the AAI plans to install larger, well-illuminated signage throughout the terminals within the next four months. According to officials, these new boards will clearly indicate distances between terminals to assist travelers in wayfinding. Additionally, the airport will introduce digital displays above security check queues to provide passengers with real-time waiting time estimates, replacing the current practice of relying on visual estimations.
Terminal aesthetics and functionality are also set for a significant overhaul. Plans include replacing existing plastic seating with sofas and installing murals that highlight the state's cultural heritage. To cater to business travelers, the AAI intends to establish dedicated workstations equipped with comfortable furniture for laptop use.
Further improvements will focus on passenger convenience, including the installation of more accessible charging points, enhanced greenery, and upgrades to baby care facilities. An official stated, “We will work towards drastically upgrading the terminals and providing a better experience.”
While these proposals aim to address long-standing issues, implementation remains subject to final approval from the AAI headquarters in New Delhi.
