The Tamil Nadu government has launched a new state-level subsidy program to boost domestic rooftop solar adoption, offering residents up to ₹22,000 in supplementary financial aid. This state initiative is designed to work alongside the central government’s PM Surya Ghar scheme, which provides up to ₹78,000 for a 3kW installation. Combined, these programs offer beneficiaries a total subsidy of ₹1 lakh.
To support this rollout, the state has earmarked ₹50 crore, with a target of reaching 1 lakh households by March 2027. The state subsidy is tiered based on system capacity: ₹5,000 for a 1kW system, ₹10,000 for a 2kW system, and the maximum ₹22,000 for a 3kW system. Eligibility is restricted to consumers who have registered through the central government portal from August 2026 onwards.
Authorities have simplified the application process, removing the need for separate filings. The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency will retrieve data directly from the central portal to process payments, which will be credited directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries. Under this arrangement, solar power generated by households is fed into the grid, allowing consumers to pay only for their net electricity consumption.
Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar stated that the scheme is designed to reduce power consumption and electricity bills for households. L.R. Venkatesh, representing the TN Solar Energy Developers Association, welcomed the move, noting that the streamlined process will encourage more consumers to adopt solar energy.
