A significant development has emerged in the child sexual abuse case involving Gem Granites owner R. Veeramani, as a Tamil Nadu Congress leader claims he alerted the Chennai Police to the scandal nearly a year before official records suggest. M.P. Ranjan Kumar, president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee’s Scheduled Caste Department, stated on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, that he first reported the allegations in November 2024.
Mr. Kumar asserts that he met with a senior police officer at the Chennai Police Commissionerate in Egmore on November 22, 2024, to submit a formal written complaint dated November 21. The complaint sought legal action against Veeramani and his associate, Shanthi, both of whom are currently in custody. According to Mr. Kumar, he provided the authorities with screenshots from a video clip depicting a man resembling the businessman abusing a minor girl. He further claims that on December 17, 2024, he shared the full video clip with an inspector from the Anti-Vice Squad.
This account contradicts the official stance of the Chennai Police, who have maintained that they only received a complaint and the video evidence via an NGO in October 2025. Mr. Kumar alleged that while he initially received assurances that the matter would be investigated, communication from the police eventually ceased. “The senior officer assured me that action would be taken after conferring with the then Police Commissioner. On November 25, 2024, an Inspector from the Anti-Vice Squad sought information related to the case. On December 17, 2024, I sent him the video clip. Thereafter, I was repeatedly asked if I knew the victims seen in the video. I did not know them, but I insisted that if the police could summon Veeramani and Shanthi or conduct a surprise raid at their homes, they would be able to retrieve more evidence,” Mr. Kumar said.
Explaining how he obtained the footage, Mr. Kumar stated that he became acquainted with Shanthi through real estate dealings. He alleged that in August 2024, she sought his assistance regarding threats she was receiving from a politician. During a subsequent meeting at her residence near Poes Garden, he claims Shanthi played the video on her television, at which point he recorded the footage and sought legal counsel before approaching the police.
Mr. Kumar stated he is coming forward now to address attempts to link him to the scandal and to challenge the police narrative regarding the timeline of the investigation. “I am ready to co-operate fully with the police to ensure justice for the victims,” he added.
