The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially extended the deadlines for filing income tax returns and audit reports for the 2026-27 assessment year. According to a press release issued on September 28, the deadline for submitting audit reports under the Income-tax Act, 1961, has been moved from September 30, 2026, to October 21, 2026. Furthermore, the filing deadline for income tax returns for corporates and other taxpayers subject to audit has been pushed back by 21 days, from October 31, 2026, to November 21, 2026.
This decision follows persistent requests from chartered accountant associations and tax professionals who highlighted the significant administrative burden involved in the audit process. Industry experts had argued that the original timeline was insufficient for the complex tasks of reconciling financial records, verifying GST returns, and cross-referencing data from Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS), and the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS).
The extension provides taxpayers and their auditors with additional time to ensure the accuracy of disclosures, including expenses, loans, statutory dues, and related-party transactions. Professionals had previously expressed concerns that the initial September 30 deadline posed substantial challenges for entities with complex financial structures.
Despite the extension, authorities have advised taxpayers not to delay their compliance efforts. Taxpayers are encouraged to use this additional time to finalize reconciliations and provide necessary documentation to their auditors. Once an audit report is uploaded by a chartered accountant, taxpayers must promptly approve the filing via the income-tax e-filing portal, ensuring they do not wait until the final day to complete the process.
