Madurantakam and Dharapuram are just two Assembly constituencies. Their results will not change the government in Tamil Nadu.
Yet Chief Minister Vijay, M.K. Stalin, Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Seeman have all thrown significant political weight behind the campaign. At times, the intensity has resembled a full-fledged Assembly election.
So why does a two-seat by-election matter so much?
Because the real contest is not merely about two MLAs. It is about the political message Tamil Nadu sends just months after the 2026 Assembly election.
For Vijay — the first report card
For the ruling TVK, this is an important electoral test after coming to power.
Has the support that brought Vijay to power remained intact? Have the first months of his government strengthened public confidence, or has dissatisfaction begun to emerge?
A TVK victory would be projected as an endorsement of Vijay's early administration. A defeat would give the opposition its first major opportunity to argue that the political momentum has begun to shift.
For AIADMK — reclaiming what it lost
The stakes are particularly high for AIADMK because the vacancies arose after its legislators resigned and moved to TVK.
A victory would allow AIADMK to send a powerful message: “The MLAs may have left the party, but the voters did not.”
A defeat, however, could raise further questions about the strength of its traditional vote base.
For DMK — the battle to lead the opposition
For DMK, this is also about establishing itself as the principal opposition to the Vijay government.
Its performance — not merely whether it wins, but also its vote share — will be closely watched as an indicator of whether voters opposed to TVK are consolidating behind the DMK.
For Seeman — protecting NTK's political space
The election also matters to NTK.
With TVK competing strongly for younger voters and those looking beyond the traditional Dravidian parties, the bypoll provides another test of how much of NTK's independent electoral base remains intact.
Two seats, but a much bigger political message
The results cannot bring down the government. But they can significantly influence Tamil Nadu's political narrative.
A TVK victory will be presented as evidence that the “Vijay wave continues.”
A DMK victory will become the “first warning to the Vijay government.”
An AIADMK victory will be portrayed as proof that its traditional grassroots base remains alive.
And a significant increase in NTK's vote share could show that the state's emerging multi-cornered politics cannot be reduced to just the three larger players.
That explains why Tamil Nadu's biggest political leaders have treated these two constituencies almost like a statewide election.
Only two MLAs will be elected. But the message delivered by voters could shape the next phase of Tamil Nadu politics.
