The India Meteorological Department has issued a forecast for widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with specific regions bracing for heavy to very heavy downpours. The northern interior districts are expected to bear the brunt of the weather system, with significant precipitation anticipated in Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, and Cuddalore. Hill stations in these areas, including Yercaud, Kolli Hills, Kalrayan Hills, and Jawadhu Hills, are also under watch for intense rainfall.
In the Cauvery Delta and its surrounding regions, southerly winds are projected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall. The districts identified for this weather pattern include Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Pudukkottai.
Western Tamil Nadu, particularly the Nilgiris and the Western Ghats, is also expected to see varying levels of rainfall. While districts such as Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Erode, Karur, and Namakkal are likely to receive showers, authorities have highlighted the Nilgiris as a point of concern. Specifically, Coonoor and other vulnerable hill slopes in the Nilgiris face a risk of intense weather spells and potential landslides.
Southern parts of the state, including Kanyakumari and the Nellai ghat areas, are also expected to experience rain, with some locations in Kanyakumari potentially receiving heavy rainfall today. Meanwhile, in the Chennai region, precipitation is expected to increase from late tonight into tomorrow morning.
Overall, meteorologists have advised close monitoring of the northern interior districts and the Nilgiris belt, while moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated to persist across the Cauvery Delta.
