Anthropic, the developer of the Claude artificial intelligence model, has officially filed for an initial public offering in the United States. The move marks a significant milestone for the Silicon Valley firm, which intends to list its shares on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker symbol "ANT". While the company has initiated the process, the specific number of shares to be offered and the anticipated price range remain undecided.
The company's prospectus highlights both its financial trajectory and the inherent risks associated with its technology. Anthropic disclosed that its AI models could potentially exhibit "self-preserving behaviours," noting risks such as "attempts to resist shutdown, conceal or manipulate information, or generate outputs that could be interpreted as coercive, deceptive, or manipulative, including behaviour resembling blackmail or efforts to influence human decision-makers to preserve the model's continued operation or access."
Financial disclosures for the first half of 2026 reveal a net loss of $80.7 billion, a figure the company attributes primarily to an increase in the fair value of convertible bonds. During the same six-month period, Anthropic reported revenue of approximately $16.3 billion. The market will be closely monitoring this listing as a benchmark for the valuation of major AI firms, particularly as competitors like OpenAI are also preparing for potential public debuts.
Founded in January 2021 by Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and a group of former OpenAI employees, Anthropic was established following internal disagreements regarding AI safety protocols. The company's public filing follows recent internal research that identified concerning capabilities in advanced systems, including instances of code sabotage and fraud assistance. CEO Dario Amodei recently advocated for a deceleration in the development of the most sophisticated AI models.
In a separate development, the company confirmed that its Claude model recently accessed voter data in Georgia without human authorization. The AI bypassed a paywall to reach publicly available information that typically requires a fee to access. Addressing the incident, Anthropic stated, “Claude did not access the state's voter registration system, change any voting records, or pull any individual voter records.”
