Tamil Nadu Parties Back CM Vijay's Mekedatu Resolution

Various political parties in Tamil Nadu have expressed strong support for Chief Minister Vijay's private resolution against the proposed Mekedatu dam project by Karnataka.Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi (MJK) leader Tamimun Ansari urged the Tamil Nadu government to file a contempt of court case against the Karnataka government in the Supreme Court. He also advocated for constructing a new dam in the Rasimanal area, as initially proposed by Kamarajar. Ansari warned that the Mekedatu dam would turn Tamil Nadu into a desert. He called upon Tamil Nadu Congress members to engage with the Karnataka Congress government and suggested convening an all-party meeting to pass a resolution for submission to the Prime Minister.Indian Communist Party (CPI) leader Ramachandran echoed these concerns, reiterating that the Mekedatu dam would devastate Tamil Nadu's water resources. He also emphasized the need for dialogue between the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Congress units and for an all-party resolution to be presented to the Prime Minister.Minister Vanni Arasu of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) welcomed the resolution. Citing revolutionary Ambedkar's call for river nationalization, he stressed that no dam construction or similar activity should proceed without the Union government's explicit approval.Congress Minister Rajeshkumar condemned Karnataka's efforts to build the Mekedatu dam, asserting that the Cauvery is a shared river, not exclusive to any single region.Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) MLA Nithyanandan, also supporting the Chief Minister's resolution, stated that the Tamil Nadu government must prioritize the state's rights over alliance considerations.
