"Michael" captures the music and magic of Michael Jackson but barely scratches the surface of the man behind it. Despite a striking performance by Jaafar Jackson, the film feels limited and leaves too many questions unanswered.
Michael Jackson electrified successive generations with his moves, whoops and fashion. Watching him do the moonwalk inspired many to try that fluid backward-forward slide.
However, looking to understand the man who single-handedly changed the grammar of the entertainment industry, and whose later life was plagued by child sex abuse allegations, multiple surgeries, drug abuse and bankruptcy, are bound to be disappointed by Michael.
The King of Pop, who gave us so many hours of joy, deserved far more than what the usually gifted Fuqua gives him here.
