Sowcar Janaki is one of the most respected veteran actresses in South Indian cinema. Born on December 12, 1931, she built an extraordinary career spanning more than seven decades, appearing in hundreds of films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. Her versatility and distinctive screen presence helped her establish a lasting identity across generations.
Janaki gained prominence through the Telugu film Shavukaru, whose title eventually became closely associated with her name. She later became widely known as Sowcar Janaki. Her natural acting style, expressive dialogue delivery and ability to handle emotional, dramatic and comic roles made her one of the most versatile performers of her generation.
Her notable Tamil films include Puthiya Paravai, Neerkumizhi, Uyarndha Manithan, Iru Kodugal, Edhir Neechal, Kaviya Thalaivi and Thillu Mullu. Over the decades, she successfully transitioned from leading roles to a wide range of character roles, allowing her to remain relevant to several generations of moviegoers. Apart from cinema, Janaki also demonstrated her talent through stage performances and radio.

In 2022, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri for her distinguished contribution to the field of Art.
