While major tech companies like Meta and Microsoft are laying off thousands of employees to transition towards Artificial Intelligence (AI), an Nvidia official warns that AI is currently more expensive than human workers.Earlier this year, Meta announced plans to lay off 10% of its workforce, approximately 8,000 employees, and halt hiring for 6,000 vacant positions. The company stated this was part of an effort to manage more efficiently and cover costs for other investments. Similarly, Microsoft offered a voluntary buyout program to thousands of its employees.Despite these efforts to expand AI technology through workforce reductions, the computational costs associated with AI are significantly higher than employee expenses. Bryan Catanzaro, an Nvidia official, stated that "AI technology does not reduce employee costs for companies; instead, it will be more expensive than currently employed humans."This assertion is supported by other data. An MIT study found that AI is cost-effective in only 23% of jobs, while for the remaining 77%, human workers remain the more economical choice.Nevertheless, large technology firms are accelerating their AI initiatives. Around $740 billion is projected to be invested in AI by 2026, indicating rapid investment across all sectors despite rising costs. Concurrently, job reductions continue, with over 92,000 tech employees already laid off this year. While AI is not cheap today, it is widely believed that it could become an unstoppable force in the future.
