The birth anniversary of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar, revered as a symbol of integrity, simplicity, and people-centric governance in Indian politics, is being respectfully observed today (July 15) across Tamil Nadu.
Born in Virudhunagar in 1903, Kamarajar, despite having limited formal education, secured an indelible place in Indian history through his political foresight and administrative prowess. Serving as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (then Madras State) from 1954 to 1963, Kamarajar prioritized education and rural development.
His administration's key achievements include the establishment of thousands of new schools, the expansion of the Midday Meal Scheme to encourage poor students to attend school, and the increase in free education opportunities.
Consequently, he earned the title 'Leader who opened the eyes of education'. Kamarajar, who prioritized party growth over power in politics, resigned from the Chief Minister's post in 1963 through the 'Kamaraj Plan' and played a significant role in national politics. As the President of the Indian National Congress, he played a crucial role in the selection of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi as Prime Ministers, earning him the moniker 'King Maker'.
Perunthalaivar Kamarajar, who lived with public service as his life's goal, passed away in 1975, but his simplicity, integrity, and people-centric governance continue to serve as a role model for many generations. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, the government, political parties, and the public across Tamil Nadu are paying floral tributes and respects.
