Important data concerning the infrastructure and supply chain of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant has been leaked online, sparking significant concern. Koodankulam, located in Tamil Nadu's Nellai district, is India's largest nuclear power facility, housing seven Russian-designed reactors.Hackers, identifying themselves as 'World Leaks', posted 19,000 documents related to the plant on the dark web.
The stolen information originated from the Reliance Group, which is engaged in construction work for Koodankulam's Units 3 and 4.The leaked documents reportedly include blueprints of the power plant, supply specifics, designs for ventilation and cooling systems, and the control room floor plan. Reliance acknowledged that some data was stolen from its servers and confirmed informing the government.
However, the company declined to specify the exact nature of the leaked information.These documents, stored between 2016 and May 2025, pertain specifically to Units 3 and 4, which are slated to become operational in 2027.
The central government, in collaboration with the Indian Nuclear Power Corporation, has initiated an investigation into the incident.Nuclear expert Nicholas Roth warned that the leakage of such critical data could severely compromise the safety of the nuclear reactors.
He emphasized that the compromised files could reveal to an adversary not only individuals with project access but also the specific computer systems involved.
