Tamil Nadu Forms Revenue Augmentation Committee

The Tamil Nadu government has established a revenue augmentation committee led by economist and policy maker Montek Singh Ahluwalia. The panel is tasked with improving the state's financial position by identifying new revenue generation opportunities. The committee's mandate includes advising the government on enhancing tax and non-tax revenues, improving administrative efficiency, and achieving self-reliance. It will explore under-tapped sources such as public sector unit dividends, land and asset monetization, and revised user charges. Additionally, the committee will recommend systemic changes to plug revenue leakages and address administrative inefficiencies through technology. It is also tasked with proposing regulatory and taxation policy changes to increase revenue from alcohol for human consumption.
