Drought Drives Rice Prices to Historic Highs
Rice prices have surged to unprecedented levels, primarily due to reduced rainfall and persistent drought conditions affecting crop yields. Traders anticipate a further increase of Rs. 20 per kilogram. The cost of a 25-kilogram rice bag sourced from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka has risen significantly, experiencing an increase of Rs. 200 to Rs. 300. Previously available for Rs. 1,300, the same bag now costs up to Rs. 1,600. Rice traders project that these elevated prices will continue for the next six months. They also warn that the price hikes observed in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are likely to impact and increase rice prices in Tamil Nadu.
