Centre Rejects Coimbatore and Madurai Metro Rail Proposals
The central government has rejected the proposed metro rail projects for Coimbatore and Madurai for the second time. The initial proposal was turned down in November 2025 due to insufficient population density, prompting the Tamil Nadu government to resubmit its request this past May. In its latest review, the Centre concluded that a metro system would not significantly reduce travel time in these cities under current conditions. Instead, the central government has advised the state to focus on increasing the number of buses to improve public transportation.
