The Tamil Nadu government has decided to introduce a state higher education policy that includes the implementation of four-year undergraduate degree programmes.
This decision follows a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan. Educationists noted that adopting these programmes is necessary to ensure students in state-affiliated colleges remain competitive with their peers across the country.
In addition to the degree reforms, the government announced several other major policy decisions. These include increasing the special reservation for government school students from 7.5% to 10%, halting the approval of new engineering colleges, and expediting the recruitment process to fill teacher vacancies. The state also plans to reconstitute search committees for vice-chancellors and appoint eminent academicians as government nominees to university syndicates.
