Authorities have begun releasing 350 cubic feet of water per second from the Mullaperiyar Dam to support irrigation and drinking water needs. Of this total, 200 cubic feet per second is allocated for irrigation in Tamil Nadu, while 150 cubic feet per second is designated for the Madurai Corporation's drinking water supply. This discharge is scheduled to continue for the next 120 days.
The release was delayed by two months due to the late arrival of the southwest monsoon. The water is expected to benefit 14,707 acres of agricultural land across the Cumbum Valley.
