A criminal court in Damascus has sentenced Syria's ousted leader Bashar al-Assad to death for crimes against humanity. Atef Najib, the former head of political security in Deraa, was also sentenced to death after being convicted of premeditated murder and torture.
The court delivered the rulings in absentia following the collapse of Assad's government. The former president fled Damascus for Moscow in December 2024 amid a surge of anti-regime activity.
Assad faced charges related to war crimes and crimes against humanity during his time in power. The legal proceedings concluded following the fall of his administration.
