A developing El Nino in the tropical Pacific is projected to become the strongest event in modern history, with experts warning it could peak between November and December. Sea surface temperatures have already reached "Super El Nino" status, while subsurface heat levels are currently exceeding those recorded during the major events of 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16.
Climate analyst Colin McCarthy stated that the phenomenon is breaking records regarding the pace of warming, projected peak intensity, and the volume of stored ocean heat. The event is expected to disrupt global atmospheric patterns, potentially leading to increased heatwaves, severe droughts, and enhanced flood risks across various continents over the next 12 to 18 months.
Researchers warn that this powerful El Nino, combined with long-term climate change, could push global average temperatures near 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by early 2027. Scientists describe the coming months as a significant test for the Earth's climate system as the world enters a period of heightened volatility.
