Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended trade negotiations with the United States following the failure to reach an agreement before a Friday night deadline. Carney announced that Canada will impose reciprocal tariffs on US goods to match the 50% tariffs Washington plans to levy on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian products.
The breakdown occurred after three days of discussions in Washington. While Carney stated that the talks made progress, he noted that they ultimately failed to meet Canada's objectives, leading him to recall his negotiating team to Ottawa.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer disputed this account, claiming Canada walked away from the table despite receiving favorable terms. Washington officials indicated that disagreements over the automotive, steel, aluminium, and lumber sectors remained unresolved, with the US warning of further measures should Canada proceed with its retaliatory tariffs.
