Nyepi requires all residents and tourists to remain indoors for 24 hours while observing silence, fasting, and meditation. During this period, the island shuts down completely, including the airport and internet services, to maintain the sanctity of the holiday. The presiding judge stated that the defendant's actions offended the Balinese people and hurt their faith.
In court, Zgraggen apologized for his actions, claiming he did not understand the gravity of the restrictions or intend to cause offense.
