A preliminary study suggests that patients who received a COVID-19 vaccine within 100 days of brain tumor surgery lived twice as long as those who did not. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham analyzed data from 187 glioblastoma patients, finding a median survival of 743 days for the vaccinated group compared to 349 days for the unvaccinated. The findings, published on medRxiv.org, have not yet been peer-reviewed.
Neurosurgeon James Markert noted that while the study shows an association, it does not prove cause and effect. Scientists hypothesize that mRNA vaccines may prime the immune system to recognize cancer cells, potentially because certain molecules on glioblastoma cells share structural similarities with coronavirus proteins. Similar survival benefits have been observed in previous research involving lung cancer and melanoma patients.
Experts emphasize that these results are preliminary and should not influence current treatment plans or delay surgery. Researchers are now working to validate these findings in larger groups and are exploring potential clinical trials. If confirmed, the discovery could offer a significant new therapeutic avenue for patients facing aggressive brain cancers.
