Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on nearly C$28 billion worth of American products, including steel, furniture, and textiles. These measures, set to take effect on 8 September, are a direct response to recent levies imposed by the Trump administration following the collapse of trade negotiations last week.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne described the move as a strategic and proportionate response to protect Canadian interests. To mitigate the economic impact, the government has pledged an additional C$7.5 billion in support programs for affected businesses and workers.
While President Donald Trump has criticized Canada's trade practices and threatened further hikes on automobile imports, some officials have expressed a desire to resume diplomatic talks. The escalating trade dispute has raised concerns regarding the future of the USMCA agreement as both nations navigate the potential for increased costs across integrated supply chains.
