Flash floods triggered by a glacial collapse near the China border have killed 626 people in Nepal. The disaster, which began on Wednesday following an ice-and-rock avalanche in Rasuwa, has caused widespread destruction to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities.
Authorities report that 2,478 people remain missing across Nepal and Tibet, including 777 foreign nationals. While 121 tourists have been rescued, search operations remain severely hindered by damaged terrain and ongoing risks of further flooding in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river areas.
Rescue efforts faced temporary suspensions on Friday as water levels rose and a newly formed lake threatened to overflow. Chinese rescue teams have reached the heavily impacted Gyirong border crossing, though officials warn that casualty figures may continue to rise as assessments proceed.
