The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has cancelled the Kanchipuram New Town Development and Heritage Revival project. The initiative, which was proposed during the previous DMK administration, aimed to integrate 18 villages into a new urban development zone.
The government has officially rescinded the gazette notification issued in 2023 for the project. This decision is part of a broader effort to avoid large-scale, non-essential construction projects due to the CMDA's current financial constraints, which include a debt burden and a budget deficit of approximately 3,500 crore rupees.
