Former IMF Executive Director for India, Surjit Bhalla, has dismissed allegations that the government manipulated GDP data to artificially inflate growth figures. Speaking during a discussion on revised national accounts, Bhalla stated there is absolutely no evidence of political interference or data exaggeration in the current reporting process.
Bhalla argued that the revisions should be analyzed through underlying components like consumption, investment, and imports rather than just the headline growth rate. He noted that consumption figures were actually revised downward and pointed to independent private-sector data that supports the reported increase in investment activity.
While acknowledging that questioning government data is a legitimate democratic process, Bhalla defended the integrity of India's statistical establishment. He concluded that the revisions are a necessary response to the country's rapidly changing economic structure and maintained that the statisticians involved are among the most conservative professionals in the field.
