OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on Tuesday that while public fear regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is justified, the industry is capable of self-regulation. Speaking at a Salesforce conference in San Francisco, Altman expressed confidence that AI firms will prioritize safety and alignment, noting that companies would slow or halt development if they could not guarantee secure outcomes.
Altman’s remarks follow recent viral claims from an Anthropic researcher regarding the potential existential risks of unchecked AI, a sentiment that has prompted calls for government regulation. However, several industry leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, argued that AI labs possess the necessary incentives and engineering expertise to manage safety internally without external legislative intervention.
Despite this push for self-governance, some experts remain skeptical of the industry's ability to police itself. Executives from OpenAI and Anthropic have confirmed they are currently engaged in dialogues to establish voluntary, industry-wide safety standards to address the growing concerns surrounding the technology's societal impact.
