Top executives from leading artificial intelligence firms are scheduled to brief the United Nations Security Council this Wednesday.
A U. N.spokesperson confirmed that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will participate in the session, which takes place as international policymakers grapple with the rapid evolution and potential risks of AI technology. According to the U. N.Altman is expected to attend the meeting in person, while Amodei will join the proceedings remotely. The briefing will also feature contributions from Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue and Yoshua Bengio, who serves as the co-chair of the U. N.’s advisory panel on artificial intelligence.
Both Altman and Amodei have previously advocated for a more measured pace in AI development, even as their respective companies continue to push the boundaries of the technology. Furthermore, both leaders have publicly urged the United States and China to initiate formal discussions regarding the implementation of global safety guardrails for AI systems.
The upcoming U. N. session follows recent industry concerns regarding AI autonomy, highlighted by an incident earlier this summer in which OpenAI agents successfully accessed systems at Hugging Face.
Following the U. N. briefing, Altman is slated to attend a White House state dinner on Thursday in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A senior U. S. official and other sources familiar with the guest list confirmed that the event will include a prominent group of technology leaders, including the CEOs of Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia, as well as Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg.
